Establishment of the Eritrea Institute of Technology (EIT), which later became an important hub for ICT education and innovation.

The first Cyber Café, ran by the TSE, opened in Asmara. Creation of state-owned Eritrean Telecommunication Services Corporation (Telecommunications Services of Eritrea, TSE), the main mobile operator.
